Kinneksbond, Centre Culturel Mamer
Jan Martens delivers a danced portrait of the Polish harpsichordist Elisabeth Chojnacka, whose exceptional passion and talent inspired some of the greatest contemporary composers, from Ligeti to Xenakis via Górecki.
Can you play your body like you play a musical instrument? After presenting Sweat Baby Sweat and Ode to the Attempt in 2020, Belgian dancer and choreographer Jan Martens returns to the Kinneksbond for a virtuoso, thrilling, and monumental tribute to Elisabeth Chojnacka (1939-2017), an outstanding musician who contributed to the revival of the harpsichord in the second half of the 20th century.
Peppered with archive footage and interviews, the seven acts go by as fast as the harpsichordist’s fingers playing the complex and percussive renditions making up the soundtrack of the show. Rhythmic nuances, dynamic moves, and offbeat outfits – Jan Martens echoes in his choreography the very traits that made Elisabeth Chojnacka an unmatched and unmatchable artist, while exploring with accuracy and playfulness the intimate relationship between music and dance.
