   Last season, Macbeth plunged the spectators of the Grand Théâtre into "sound and fury": Verdi's music and Michael Thalheimer's staging incited the mad race for ambition, the irresistible spiral of violence, the terrible anxieties, the fatal punishment.
Pascal Dusapin re-examines this gruesome story from a clearly contemporary perspective. Marked by Edgar Varèse, Franco Donatoni and influenced by jazz, he develops an independent style. His sense of melody enables him to reproduce the intonation of the voice in instrumental writing. His varied score has really become an actress of that which is "replayed".
With his librettist Frédéric Boyer, Dusapin imagines Macbeth in the afterlife. All the characters are dead, but some don't know it: Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, the spectre of Banco, the child ... This dead child is the cornerstone of the guilt that haunts the Macbeths. Trapped in operatic limbo, they are condemned to relive their past in an otherworldly realm guarded by nightmarish beings. As an emblem of evil the Shakespearean couple draws us into the darkest regions of the human soul.
