Marcos Morau and his company La Veronal are interested in new means of expression, cultural references in film, literature, music and photography and keen on inventing a strong narrative language. After Pasionaria in 2019, they return to the Grand Théâtre with their new creation Sonoma.
The word "sonoma" does not properly exist in Spanish. However, if it did, it could be said to derive from either the Greek root "soma" meaning "body" or the Latin "sonum" meaning "sound": body of sound and the sound of the body.
Today we live history in a hurry, at such a rapid pace that we can barely follow it. We fall forward into it and during this accelerating fall, we shout. Sonoma is the scream of the man subjected to this rhythm, at the limit of his existence from which the primitive howl of the body arises. It is the pulse of humanity. Sonoma is the certainty that the virtual and the digital can only be overcome by a return to the origin, to the body. It's a journey from organic matter to a place between sleep and fiction, where the human meets the extraordinary. A journey to make everyday things strange, letting signs germinate, proliferate and communicate with the most irrational layers of humanity, where the united cries out to separate, and the separated seeks to be reunited.
Marcos Morau, born 1982 in Valencia, studied choreography at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona, the Conservatorio Superior de Danza de Valencia and Movement Research in New York. He started to work as a choreographic assistant with the Nederlands Dans Theater 2 and the company IT Dansa directed by Catherine Allard. In 2005 he founded the company La Veronal and in 2013 Morau was awarded the Premio Nacional de Danza by the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
