Following in the footsteps of Ballet National de Marseille and Peeping Tom, the Ballet BC will be in residence at the Théâtres de la Ville in 2021 for the world premiere of their new production. This creation by Medhi Walerski, Ballet BC's new artistic director, as of July 2020, in succession of Emily Molnar, will be a full-evening work divided into two parts.
The first part will be a renewed version of Walerski's GARDEN , originally created for Nederlands Dans Theater 1 in 2016. This work for ten dancers is set to Camille Saint-Saëns's Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 14 . The original piece will be extended by the Allegro of Saint-Saëns's Quintet , where the virtuoso piano and strings propose an exploration of space, dynamics and resonance that is reflected by the dancers in solos, duets, quartets and ensemble sections.
The second part of the evening will contrast with the first, moving away from romantic music to a more electronic and contemporary environment created by Belgian soundscape designer Adrien Cronet, who collaborated with Walerski on his 2019 creation for Nederlands Dans Theater 2. This act aims to look at the primal space that is only suggested in GARDEN , with an emphasis on the primitive and intuitive connection between the dancers that, in opposition to the sensitivity of the first act, invites the raw and chaotic side of human experience onstage. These two choreographies, so different in appearance, will show the whole range of Ballet BC's virtuosity.
