Description

Marry Me in Bassiani is the latest choreographic creation of the collective (LA)HORDE, founded in 2013, which brings together Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer and Arthur Harel. (LA)HORDE focus on the codes of different artistic disciplines and develop their work through new media, staging, film making, video installation, choreography and performance. At the centre of their creation is the body.%0A%0A(LA)HORDE's research on post-internet and viral dances triggered questions about their origins and helped the collective understand how these dance styles might be influenced by folkloric or traditional dances.%0A%0AThis led them to discover traditional Georgian dance. In the communist era, ballet had not only served as a medium for national unification in Georgia but also as a means of resistance against Soviet cultural hegemony. This instrumentalisation of ballet raises interesting questions about how dance, rather than being merely decorative, can fight political power. A few months ago in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, dance once again became a form of peaceful protest: after a raid in the nightclub Bassiani, tens of thousands of young people demonstrated in front of the parliament by dancing to techno music.%0A%0A(LA)HORDE are going to work with 15 dancers from the Georgian ensemble Iveroni, using their remarkable skills and extraordinary virtuosity. They will build with them a narrative about who they are and what they stand for.%0A
