Henry Purcell's Dido & Aeneas is a monumental work in Baroque opera, an achievement all the more remarkable for his first opera. It is a first, too, for director and choreographer Franck Chartier who has clearly enjoyed playing with the art form. His is a radical reimagining in which he overlays the original unfolding tragedy of the heartbroken Queen of Carthage with a hallucinatory vision in a parallel universe. As pictures twirl on the wall and a discarded jacket moves like a man, the surreal dimension makes Dido's internal anguish come to life.

As artistic director of Belgian dance collective Peeping Tom, Franck Chartier presses his dancers into the service of his whirlwind production, having split the opera's roles into speaking, dancing and singing parts. Emmanuelle Haïm navigates a musical route for the Le Concert d'Astrée orchestra, adding some new music by Atsushi Sakaï to emphasise the parallel universe.
