Never has there been a better moment in history for Pina Bausch's timeless classic, Kontakthof, an inspired piece about human contact. Tanztheater Wuppertal, the former company of the late dancer and choreographer, always creates a stir at the Grand Théâtre. This visit by the troupe dedicated to continuing Pina Bausch's work follows two previous sellout seasons.
In Kontakthof, the action takes place in a shabby dance hall where women in slinky dresses and men in sharp suits parade and prowl around each other, to a soundtrack of love songs from the Twenties and Thirties (with contributions ranging from Charlie Chaplin to Jean Sibelius). There are brief moments of tender connection between the 24 dancers and outbursts of aggression, as if no one is sure how to behave. As ever from the work of Pina Bausch, real humour is punctuated by flashes of horror and intense moments of truth.
