In collaboration with internationally renowned pianist Cathy Krier, a regular at the Théâtres de la Ville ( Funeral Blues , 2018, and In die Poesie gehört die Ökonomie , 2019), choreographer Elisabeth Schilling presents an original approach to Hungarian composer György Ligeti's virtuoso Études pour piano in this new piece.
For Ligeti, in the process of composition "tactile concepts are almost as important as acoustic ones". In other words, the movements and developments of music are not merely a matter of hearing but also of sensation; they are felt "as a tactile form, as a succession of muscle tensions". Through these forms and successions, Ligeti's pieces behave like "growing organisms".
Looking at dance and music as related forms that grow alongside and into each other, Elisabeth Schilling, together with pianist Cathy Krier and five dancers, will follow this line of thought and explore how the Études pour piano can be interpreted through dance. They will create a dance-concert and a concert-dance full of captivating multisensorial imagery in which no form or medium ultimately dominates.
